    Speed & Fee

Two of XRP's most cited advantages are its transaction speed and its negligible fees. Unlike most blockchain networks, on XRPL the fee does not affect transaction speed — all confirmed transactions settle in 3–5 seconds regardless of the fee paid.

    XRP Transaction Speed: 3–5 Seconds

The XRP Ledger achieves consensus through a unique Federated Byzantine Agreement mechanism, not proof-of-work mining. Each ledger closes approximately every 3–5 seconds, and your transaction is included in the very next ledger after submission (under normal conditions). There are no block time delays or mempool waiting times in the Bitcoin sense.

Does Paying More Fee Speed Up XRP?

On Bitcoin and Ethereum, paying a higher fee increases the likelihood of faster inclusion in the next block. On XRPL, this is not the case under normal conditions. All transactions meeting the minimum fee are treated equally by validators and included in the next open ledger. Only during exceptional high-load periods does the open-ledger cost escalation create any priority differentiation.

    Throughput: 1,500 TPS

The XRP Ledger can handle approximately 1,500 transactions per second at peak capacity. For comparison, Bitcoin processes 7 TPS, Ethereum processes 15–30 TPS (more with Layer 2), and Visa processes ~24,000 TPS. XRPL's throughput is sufficient for many real-world payment scenarios at its current fee structure.

    Practical Implications for Payments

The combination of 3–5 second finality, 1,500 TPS throughput, and $0.00002 fees makes XRP particularly suited for: cross-border remittances (replace 2–5 day SWIFT wires), micropayment streams, real-time gross settlement, and high-frequency trading settlement. These use cases require both speed and cost-efficiency that XRP delivers.

Comparing XRP Speed vs Other Blockchains

Bitcoin: 10–60 minute confirmation, $1–$50 fee. Ethereum: 12–30 second blocks (faster with Layer 2), $2–$20 gas. Solana: ~0.4 seconds, $0.004 fee. XRP: 3–5 seconds, $0.00002 fee. XRP strikes a balance — not as fast as Solana but significantly cheaper and with superior institutional adoption for payments.
